Tactilescape (2019)

plaster of Paris, lace fabric, acrylic paint

Tactilescape is set to be experimental in seek for idyllic artful tactile terrain artefacts moulded in plaster of Paris with two native objects of our homeland – namely, guipure lace and shell of durian, signifying the intertwining of the west influences and the indigenous east.

The former is a product of the west brought into our land through the colonisation movement in the 16th century; whilst the latter is originated Malay Peninsular and first recorded by European merchant in the 15th century. The former is gracious and elegant; whilst the latter is in opposition.

Tactilesacpe sets to be an instrument to encounter the beautiful moments when both distinctive objects meet, where its traces and memories are cast and captured by the solidified fluid of plaster and the formation of undulation happens organically. The outcome was unplanned.

The fluorescent colour scheme is a contemporary representation of the vividness of cultural identity of this land.
